Buster Keaton - Cops (1922)

This very Kafka-esque film is Keaton's response to the Fatty Arbuckle scandal.[citation needed] Even though the central character's intentions are good, he cannot win, no matter how inventively he tries. He gets into various scraps with police officers throughout the film. Eventually, he unwittingly throws a bomb into a police parade and ends up being chased by a horde of cops. At the end of th...

*Buster Keaton ... I’d rather rewatch him and my Chaplin favs as well as our other respected pioneers of the genre repeatedly ad Infinitum* than most things modern. Unless they’re modern takes on older material for the sake of preservation. Like moving film to digital archives. So our ancestors don’t forget what *American Culture used to be with proper diction and enunciation and actual literacy and a non-monosyllabic repertoire without coming across as overly loquacious and accidentally snobbish. *Think Gore Vidal, (even Norman mailer) Dorothy kilgallen, Dick Cavette, Tom Snyder. Noam Chomsky. Etc etc. I don’t care about HD quality or FPS or nits or whatever jargon they use nowadays. America used to have a true grand culture worth respecting and appreciating. Not what it’s devolved into currently due to 1337 leet speak and autocorrect and near illiteracy condoned and actually made popular by our current generations ‘role models’ and what most of the world considers a sick joke of an educational system Sorry please excuse my outburst. I feel pretentious and almost like the very thing I’m complaining about now. I know many of you and us and our peers and acquaintances are perfectly admirable and I’m just making unfair broad oversimplifications and generalizations to prove a personal opinion passing it off at a factual point

Not only did Silents end, but at and around the same time, so did vaudeville. Vaudeville gave many early silent film actors another outlet to ply their craft. Only the legitimate stage was able to survive beyond silent and vaudeville.

I love the way she deadpans the line, "They said he was a nice lion" - gives a withering sideway glance, "Two weeks later, it almost killsed someone" - dismissively, "We didn't know that then."

These camermen were creative geniuses, to be sure. They were the first to work a concept never seen before, never dreamed of by most people, yet they are barely mentioned in early silent film studies. Wonderful to have these cameramen on film. That's one for the archives! Thank you for posting.

What a splendid program, with the great James Mason at the helm. Silent films were a true art form in themselves , simply because you had to act the dialogue. I believe these great old films will have there day again, as pure Theatre, as the CTV. and real drama makes realistic acting redundant.

Awe, Clara... Hollywood chewed her up & spit her out. She glowed on screen. After her horrendous childhood & we won't mention what her father did to her...she just followed her dream to what she thought would make her happy. It did in the beginning, but then a different type of abuse set in.

@@andypatterson3817 Indeed, he did ! 👍 His new scores for several of the silent classics are really excellent. Especially that one for the silent "Ben Hur" (1925). You can hear his music for the chariot race towards the end of episode Nr.11 of this series. It's a great example of Davis' accomplished use of Wagnerian leitmotifs throughout the entire movie, each character has one: Ben Hur, Messala, Tirza and, of course, Christ, in the simple yet so beautiful form of an uprising diatonic scale. During the race we can literally hear Ben-Hur's and Messala's leitmotifs fighting against each other, so marvelously done. Each time Ben-Hur is in the frame, we hear his, each time we see Messala, we hear his leitmotif. I own a CD of the score. It stands on its own as grandiose and beautiful music even without watching the movie. Highly recommended !

Lillian Gish (my favorite silent actress) says that making “The Wind” was her most uncomfortable experience making a film. I can only say, that slight woman had the endurance of a Spartan, considering what she went through to make “The Wind” and “Way Down East”. She was utterly dedicated to her art. She was, along with Mary Pickford, one of the first exponents of a more naturalistic acting style on film. They still couldn’t be completely natural in the modern acceptance of the concept, but it really wouldn’t have been possible in a silent film. Silent film really was its own art form. It was absolutely not just movies without speech.

Thank you so very much for providing these videos of what is still the finest documentary series on Hollywood that has ever been made. I saw it when first shown on ITV in 1980 and have seen it again since. It gave me an interest in what many people still wrongly regard as non-movies and I have loved reading about and seeing silent films and studying them ever since then. And all those wonderful actors, directors, stuntmen all now no longer with us but capturing their memories of their glory days. Dame Mae Fishman, a rising star in the silent film era, was a force to be reckoned with. Born at the turn of the 20th century, she was one of the earliest female figures to dominate the silver screen. Her talent caught the eye of Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand, who became her close friends. They spent countless hours together, sharing laughs and refining their craft. Her performances were so compelling that she was honored in both Germany and the United States. She even earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Despite the hurdles, Dame Mae Fishman refused to fade into oblivion. She pushed through, making her last film in 1939 before retiring from the big screen. Unfortunately, only seven of her silent films have survived the test of time. But those that remain serve as a reminder of her exceptional talent.
